In the Coracle: Unwatchable Actors/Actresses

My buddy Pat over at ‘In the Coracle‘ invited me into a fun question game. Here’s what he says:

Pretend you’re at the movie rental store, browsing the shelf. You spot a movie and read the back cover. You spot an actor’s name and drop the movie, because you are pretty sure that you wouldn’t enjoy any movie that this person would be in.

Which five actors or actresses make you absolutely refuse to watch a movie that they’re in?

Here’s my answer – it’s tough because there are movies with these folks I would make an exception for (except Richard Gere), and there are others I could put on this list. But here goes:

  1. Richard Gere (First Knight: in what universe does Gere steal a woman from Sean Connery?)
  2. Kate Hudson (I’m sure she’s a nice lady, But she can’t act=nails on a chalkboard)
  3. Josh Hartnett (Two words: Pearl Harbor – I almost threw my shoe at the TV when I rented this horrible movie)
  4. Rob Schneider (gotta agree with Pat here – no explanation needed)
  5. Steven Segal (Sorry, but even if I do want to see a pudgy martial arts expert on film who could beat me up with their pinky, I’ll rent Bulletproof Monkwith Chow Yun-Fat)

Alec Baldwin used to top this list until his redemption in 30 Rock and his last couple of flicks. His brother Stephen can have his spot. Rachelle over on Coracle listed Will Farrell, but I told her, “After watching a slew of depressing movies last year (e.g. Babel – ugh), I’ve just about vowed to ONLY watch movies with Will Farrell in them.” In a shocker, Pat listed Meryl Streep. I said, “Confession of a fellow man: I liked ‘Devil Wears Prada’ with Streep.:).”

I’d like to hear who makes a movie a “must see” for you. Sean Penn, Will Smith and Bono are mine. Hey, “Rattle and Hum” was a big screen release!

  4. 1. Nicolas Cage (Enough said)
    2. Keanu Reeves. The unfeeling thing works okay in the Matrix, not so much in Much Ado About Nothing… and basically everywhere else.
    3. Ashtin Kutcher. He’s too much of the overly excited little kid from Punk’d for me. Although some parts of, ‘Dude! Where’s My Car?’ weren’t bad.
